United Way Caregivers Coalition
Some 44 million Americans care for a loved one who is ill, frail or living with a
disability. Whether providing occasional help with chores, arranging transportation to medical appointments, or
administering 24/7 personal care, unpaid family caregivers are the backbone of long-term care in America.
Often assuming their role without preparation or education, caregivers take on risks to their own physical, emotional,
and financial health. Many watch their savings dry up, absorb the financial hit of having to pass up promotions, or
are even forced to leave the workplace altogether. These stakes can be especially high for ALICE® (Asset
Limited, Income Constrained, Employed)
families who are already struggling to make ends meet and may have jobs that cannot provide the flexibility
caregivers often need.
In response, United Way Caregivers Coalition has developed a range of responses and programs that are free
and open to all, promote knowledge and action around critical issues, and provide access to help for unpaid family
caregivers in our five-county footprint of Morris, Somerset, Suburban Essex, Sussex, and Warren counties.

Assistive Technology for Caregivers Program*
Through this free program, caregivers and those they care for receive and learn how to use devices to help ease the
stress of caregiving. From medication reminders to remotely checking in on a loved one, assistive technology is
tailored to meet the needs of each family. Due to the pandemic, we are currently providing the following services
virtually: home assessment, installation of technology, education on how to use it, and ongoing support. For more
information, email tech4caregivers@unitedwaynnj.org or call
973.993.1160.
*Currently, this program is available to caregivers who are caring for a loved one who resides in
Morris County. As we work to expand throughout our region, check back for updates.
